Rebello Backs Community As State Calls In Reedy Creek Quarry

The southern Gold Coast has secured an important win in the fight against the proposed Reedy Creek quarry, with the Deputy Premier today confirming the project will be called in.

Federal Member for McPherson, Leon Rebello MP, has welcomed the decision following sustained advocacy and strong opposition from local residents.

Since the development application was lodged in 2025, Mr Rebello has stood shoulder to shoulder with the community — helping raise awareness, encouraging submissions to both council and state consultation processes, and actively supporting grassroots advocacy efforts.

Mr Rebello worked alongside residents to letterbox homes, assist locals in preparing submissions, and joined community leaders, local councillors and state representatives at the February rally at Coplick Family Sport Park.

“The State Government’s decision to call in this project is a very welcome outcome for our community,” Mr Rebello said.

“Our community came together in a mammoth campaign — letterboxing hundreds of homes and spreading the word to ensure every local was informed and empowered to have their say.

“The Deputy Premier’s decision to call in this project reflects the serious concerns raised by local residents, as evidenced in more than 10,000 submissions during the consultation process.

“This outcome shows what can be achieved when our community comes together and stands firm.”

Mr Rebello said he would continue to advocate strongly to ensure the community’s voice remains front and centre as the process progresses.

“I will always back our local community and fight to protect our way of life.”
