Congratulations to our 2025 McPherson Honours winners!
The McPherson Honours are an opportunity for our community to celebrate the southern Gold Coast’s quiet achievers, local heroes, and community groups whose contributions deserve to be recognised.
Congratulations to all of the nominees, finalists and winners and thank you for everything you do for our community.
Community Organisation of the Year – Tugun Girl Guides
Tugun Girl Guides empower around 60 local girls through leadership, adventure and community service, building confidence and strong community connections across the Gold Coast.
Finalists included: Ingleside State School P&C Assosciation, Inspire! Dementia-Friendly Choir, Fight4Youth, and Beached @ Burleigh.
Educator of the Year – John Costigan
John Costigan has been a dedicated Surf Life Saving member since 1999, contributing extensive patrol hours and playing a key role in training and mentoring lifesavers.
Finalists included: Anthony Clarke, Joel Kinneally, Kylie Williams, and Shelley Travers.
Local Hero - Wayne Holmes
Through “I Love Robina,” Wayne Holmes has supported the community for over 20 years, assisting those in need and mobilising local generosity.
Finalists included: Catherine Donnelly, Patsy Tierney, Peter Mckenna, and Yvonne Humphries.
Service Club of the Year – Currumbin RSL
Currumbin RSL has contributed over $5.5 million in five years to support veterans, youth and community programs, making a significant local impact.
Finalists included: Kirra Surf Life Saving Club, Lions Club of Mudgeeraba, Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club, and Robina Lions.
Sporting Club of the Year – Varsity Vipers Basketball
With over 500 players, Varsity Vipers Basketball Club fosters youth development, teamwork and strong community connections across the Gold Coast.
Finalists included: Bond University AFL, Currumbin Creek Paddlers Club, Gold Coast District Cricket Club, and Burleigh Heads Palm Beach Croquet Club.
Surf Life Saver of the Year – Will Barwick
Since 2020, Will Barwick has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment, contributing extensive patrol hours and mentoring future lifesavers.
Finalists included: Bianca Clark, Chris Gale, Geoffrey Wright, and Peter Harding.
Volunteer of the Year – Ian Sarow
Ian Sarow has supported the Men’s Shed for over a decade, mentoring members and creating a welcoming space that promotes wellbeing and connection.
Finalists included: Aylana Watkins, Glenys Danby, Judi Fischer, and Melanie Sanders.
Youth Leadership Award – Mia Edgley
At just 13, Mia Edgley has shown outstanding dedication to volunteering, helping raise significant funds for community initiatives.
Finalists included: Gabriella Doman, Koby Carroll, Rory Phelps, and Ryder Bodley.
Community Safety Award – Trevor Taylor
Trevor Taylor is a dedicated community safety advocate, actively supporting residents and strengthening neighbourhood connections.
Finalists included: Anna Dennis and Michelle Beattie.
Environmental Champion – Marina Bonnett
Marina Bonnett leads wildlife rescue efforts through Save Our Swans, protecting local swans and inspiring community action.
Finalists included: Joanne Brierley and Glenda McCully.
Small Business of the Year – Blackboard Varsity
Blackboard Varsity is a vibrant local café known for its welcoming atmosphere, innovative menu and strong community focus.
Finalists included: Vela Estate and PrepMates.
Employee of the Year – Carly Donkelaar
Carly Donkelaar from The Lash Spa in Varsity Lakes is known for her kindness and community spirit, consistently supporting local businesses and those around her.
Finalists included: Gabrielle Kinneally.
Employer of the Year – The Lash Spa
The Lash Spa is a thriving business built on integrity and care, creating a supportive and empowering workplace culture.
Finalists included: Dynamique Physiotherapy + Wellness and Ascent Speech Pathology.
Spirit of McPherson Award – Kath Koch
Kath Koch leads Rotary Youth Exchange, creating life-changing opportunities for young people and strengthening community connections.
Finalists included: Adin Kenavan, Monique Ferrario, Ruth Porter, and Terry ‘Tappa’ Teece.
